Run details for Thursday night (19th August)
Please gather at Plas Heddychol, Aberbechan, Newtown SY16 3AX.
The route will take you through a variety of country lanes visiting Abermule, Cefn-y-Coed,
Montgomery, Marton, Rorrington, Priest Weston, Churchstoke, then up on to the Kerry
ridge before dropping down into Sarn for the return to the Abermule. We shall stop
at the Abermule Hotel for refreshments, etc.
The actual route is around 39 miles and will take just less than two hours allowing
for photo calls, pit stops etc. I suggest you print out these instructions.
Depart Plas Heddychol with odometer zeroed. Sat/Nav’s banned until you get lost.
- Turn left onto B4568 and after 0.3 miles turn right on B4389 until you reach the
A489 junction by which time your odometer should be showing 1.2 miles.
- Turn left and drive towards Abermule turning right on to the B4368 (odometer 2.1
miles).
- In Abermule turn right for Clun B4368 over level crossing.
- After one mile (your total now 3.5 miles) turn left on unclassified road over bridge
and uphill. (The Captains Pitch).
- At the next T Junction turn right (odometer now 3.9 miles if the technology is working
correctly) and proceed.
- At crossroads (the distance is now 5.2 miles) carry on for Montgomery (4 miles per
the sign).
- At 5.8 miles another left turn signed Montgomery then after 6.5 miles STOP and take
a look weather permitting. This could be the centre of the earth, you can see Snowdonia
on a clear day, Montgomery Town Hill (Monument forward and left), then there is Welshpool
down the valley.
- Proceed to 7.2 miles look ahead there is a foreign land (England) with Corndon to
the right.
- At 8.1 miles turn left to Montgomery then at 9.2 miles turn right on to Kerry Street
and then left into car park for toilets “Pit stop” for those needing to lose fluid.
Really!! - will they be open?
- After that quick relief, pass down Broad Street (on the other side of the Town Hall)
to the far end with 9.4 miles showing on the odometer.
- Turn left down Princes Street then turn right before leaving Montgomery on the Welshpool
road (actually Forden Road). Take care turning here.
- As the odometer creeps to 11.5 miles turn right signed to Marton
- At 12.9 miles take the staggered crossing of A490 with care and proceed to Marton.
- In Marton and with 15.7 miles completed turn right for Rorrington.
- At 17.2 miles you pass Rorrington Hall. After 18.6 miles you may note a sign for
Stone Circle. We did consider a detour but it’s not recommended.
- At 19.7 miles Priest Weston and 19.8 miles take the turn for Newtown.
- At 21.0 miles there’s another chance (weather permitting) for the camera crew, so
pull up and see the views to the right - Montgomery, Sarn Valley and the Kerry Ridge.
OK back to the cars - stop enjoying the scenery I’m getting thirsty.
- At 21.9 miles on Green Lane we are heading to Churchstoke and at T junction (odometer
22.5 miles) turn right then at (22.6 miles) go left “Unsuitable for HGV’s” and pass
the Church on your right.
- At 23.9 miles turn right B4385 then at 24.0 miles turn left signed The CWM
- At 24.5 miles left for Bishop’s Moat, and at 26.7 miles a cross road turn hard right
towards Hopton.
- We are now on the Kerry Ridge
- At 28.0 miles go straight ahead, and at 30.7 miles stop for a final photo call.
- Proceed. We now drop very quickly down into Sarn Village - coming out by The Sarn
Inn.
- Now drive back to Glanmwl (Newtown direction) and turn right on to the B4386 (sp
Abermule).
- Back to the Hotel opposite the junction in Abermule for a well earned pint . . .
